TERRIFIC TRAFFIC

Acrylic mixed media memory scape on wood

24" x 24” | 61 cm x 61 cm

Kyoto is one of my all-time favorite cities in Japan, it is really a world apart, walking around Gion and visiting the multitude of temples, shrines and gardens, you can still see the old Japan, although often you will have to look for it between hordes of tourists. But if you venture outside of the main tourist destinations you will find yourself transported to ancient Japan. Unless you find yourself in the city center, which like any large Japanese city, is bustling with people and traffic, but, because it's Kyoto, that traffic will include the occasional rikshaw!

Right now, painting the beauty of Japan helps me deal with feeling homesick for the country I had to leave behind last year.

All my life, saying goodbye has been difficult for me. The first time going to school involved huge crying fits that ended up with me throwing up, just because I had to say goodbye to my mom.

I have become better at handling goodbyes over the years but it hasn't gotten any easier.

While I was painting this piece in my studio in Canada I was thinking about the people that were walking these same streets in beautiful Kyoto with sore feet after walking from temple to temple all day, enjoying the magic of stepping back in time in this beautiful city. Every time I would think of this I felt a pang of longing but having this piece on my easel made the country I miss so dearly feel just a little bit closer.

My paintings help me to stay connected to the places I had to leave behind and I hope they will evoke similar memories for you and inspire you to reconnect to the beauty of the world around you.

I want to help you relive happy memories of familiar places and inspire you to visit and explore destinations you would otherwise never have thought to visit. I invite you to be nostalgic with me and (re)-discover the world through my eyes.

These pieces convey the heart and soul of the city, I am fascinated by the urban landscape and the people that populate it. I love that unique viewpoint you have as a traveler, you start noticing the most mundane, everyday objects. These essential elements make up the living, breathing and evolving ecosystem of a city.

In my work I combine my love of photography, painting and travel. I merge many photographs into a singular image that, at first glance, reflects reality, but there is a little mystery there. I encourage you to explore, let your mind wander and your imagination run free!

WHAT MATERIALS ARE USED TO CREATE THIS ARTWORK?
This mixed media painting on wood is created using a combination of hand layered photo transfer techniques and acrylic paints and mediums. Click here to see the creation process of a similar artwork from start to finish.

IS THE ARTWORK SIGNED?
Yes, all original artworks are signed on the front in the lower right corner. They also have their title, date, artist name and a signed certificate of authenticity on the back.

IS THIS PAINTING READY TO HANG?
Yes all my wood panel pieces are all ready to hang, most have a wire on the back or, for larger pieces a set of eyelets that enable flush mounting (flush mounting is highly recommended for pieces larger than 48”x36”). My paintings are not framed but the sides are painted black so they show beautifully without a frame. If you prefer I can arrange framing for you, fill out the form below for a quote. Because framing adds weight and volume during shipping you may prefer to have your local framer do the work.

I LOVE YOUR ARTWORK BUT NOT SURE I CAN AFFORD IT RIGHT NOW. DO YOU OFFER A PAYMENT PLAN?
Absolutely! It is very important to me that you can add the piece you fell in love with to your collection, when it comes to purchasing art you should not have to make concessions. That is why the Artist Abroad is always happy to offer a payment plan that fits your situation. When full payment has been made the artwork will be delivered to you.
