Experience the enchanting beauty of Japan in the heart of Toronto.

Latitude 44 Gallery presents a series of new mixed-media cityscapes by Denise Buisman Pilger.

Saint Jerome, September 1, 2022.  Montréal-based Dutch artist Denise Buisman Pilger brings Japan to the Junction with her solo exhibition titled: Memories of Japan, at the Latitude 44 Gallery (2900 Dundas St. West, Toronto). The exhibition features the artist’s most recent works, in which she presents a series of condensed memories from her time in Japan. The exhibition runs from October 6th - November 10th, with a special event to celebrate the exhibition’s official opening on Thursday, October 6th, 6 pm – 9 pm.

During her three years of living in Nagoya, Japan Denise Buisman Pilger fell deeply in love with the country, its architecture, its culture and its people. “Moving back to Canada was not easy. The reversed culture shock, enhanced by isolated pandemic living, made life in Canada seem dull and mundane. For the past 2 years, I experienced a strong need to feel that connection to Japan. Working on these paintings brought some of the magic back into my life  and made the country I missed so dearly feel just a little bit closer.”  In her work, Denise brings her memories back to life, giving us a chance to step into her scenes and experience this beautiful, unique country.

We’re excited to welcome Denise back to Canada and to give us the opportunity to explore Japan and its rich culture through her newest series of memoryscapes.” Say Latitude 44 gallery directors MaryAnn Di Bernardo and Janet Di Bernardo

Born and raised in the Netherlands, Buisman Pilger has a Bachelor's Degree in Illustration from the Willem de Kooning Academy of Arts in Rotterdam. She has called Amsterdam, Fort Worth, Montréal, Nagoya, Japan and now Saint Jerome home and she has proudly exhibited her work at the 2011 Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, the Artist Project and a variety of galleries in the US, Canada, the Netherlands and Japan. In 2018 she received the Foreign Minister award at the Toyota Municipal Art Museum. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections around the world.

“These paintings hold a special place in my heart, they helped me through a difficult time and I hope they will remind you of the beauty and magic that can be found in our world. Through my work, I aim to bridge cultural and language barriers to make the world a place where all people feel connected to one another. Join us at our special opening event and experience enchanting Japan for yourself at Latitude 44 Gallery on October 6th from 6-9 pm!” Says Denise Buisman Pilger

Interior Design Show Toronto (Booth 438)

Saint Jerome, February 21, 2022. IDS will launch its 2022 series of events with its flagship event in Toronto with IDS Toronto taking place April 7-10 with the theme of New Futures and the Artist Abroad will be there! The new spring date for IDS Toronto was chosen in conjunction with key stakeholders in the industry. Interior Design Show’s New Futures theme and branding for 2022 by Sali Tabacchi design studio is indicative not only of the vision for a strong global show reflective of future design trends but also as a catalyst to open new bright futures to the design industry in Canada and beyond.

Adaptation and change are key to success in the design industry as design conventions, processes and technology push the industry forward and that is the approach the IDS team is taking when looking towards their events for 2022 and the theme of New Futures.  This past year the IDS team introduced a series of micro-offsite events as well as a series of virtual seminars to reinforce a touchpoint with the design industry year-round. The team plans to continue to offer these additional activations throughout the year with both their IDS Toronto and IDS Vancouver events.

Over the last 20+ years, IDS has become both a catalyst and authority for Canadian design. During those two decades, we’ve witnessed a lot of change. Yesterday’s designer has become today’s problem solver and tomorrow’s visionary. Designers now create experiences at the intersection of technological and social problems, imagining new roads to alternative realities. As these imagined futures come into view, so does a vision that is exciting and full of promise.

As Canada’s premier showcase of new products, superstar designers, and avant-garde concepts from North America and beyond, IDS is the platform to experience the importance of design firsthand, uncovering not just what’s new and what’s next, but taking part in the larger conversation around design. Experiential and transformative, we bring together compelling concepts, innovative products, upcoming talent and key experts in the industry so you can be inspired by the best of the future.

Join us at the Metro Toronto Convention Center South Building from April 7-10 (Booth 438)

Plus One Art Exhibition at Leslie Grove Gallery in Toronto

Saint Jerome, January 28, 2022. Stéphanie McLean and Denise Buisman Pilger will exhibit together at the ‘Plus One’ Art exhibition at the Leslie Grove Gallery in Toronto from February 2-20.

The Plus One exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate artist friendships friendships, friendships bind us together, whether they are people we've known from childhood or people we've only recently met. These are the individuals with whom we share our pleasures and happiness, as well as those who support us during difficult times.

The visual contrast between McLean’s portrait and the broader Japanese scene by Buisman Pilger can be explained by the difference in the proximity of the subjects in each piece. This dichotomy encourages the viewer’s eye to bounce back and forth between the two pieces, while temporarily resting on the burst of green in the Buisman Pilger painting and then on the blues and greens in McLean's.

"The Afro-Cuban Woman with Cigar contemplatively draws on her cigar, while she absorbs the beauty of the Japanese scene in front of her.”

Come see ‘Afro-Cuban Woman with Cigar’ & ‘Time Travelers’ at Leslie Grove Gallery from February 2-20.
